KARUNA NILAYAM FOUNDATION

About Us

The Sri Sathya Sai Karuna Nilayam Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to provide Healthcare, Education and Social Care entirely free of cost to the community whilst also working towards the upliftment of marginalized women through several programs and skills training sessions to provide them with stability, financial independence and ultimately, provide them and their families with a better standard of living.

Our projects are based in the East of the island; in Kirankulam, Batticaloa.

Batticaloa was chosen by Bhagawan because it had suffered tremendously through a 30-year civil war and faced more than its fair share of natural disasters. The conflict produced over 30,000 war widows and families who had lost their homes and livelihood. This community faced another devastating loss when the 2004 tsunami decimated its shores and coastal villages, affecting the area and its residents gravely. In addition, the entire district of Batticaloa has been, and continues to be impacted by monsoon floods and tropical cyclones, leaving the community vulnerable and in continuous need of humanitarian support.

Perhaps it was all this tragic history that brought about the blessing of a facility that not only caters to the direct community, but to the people of the entire island that need free health care, sociocare and educare, and alleviation from what has been the hardest circumstance in our island’s history.

"Every life is a gift of God and therefore precious. Our hospital has been working around the clock to preserve and protect this most precious gift of life for now 4000 people of the region with cardiovascular diseases. This new milestone at our cath lab is a testimony to our commitment and continued efforts to help as many as possible. I convey my heartiest wishes and blessings to the entire team of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Teaching Hospital Batticaloa and Faculty of Healthcare Sciences - Eastern University who are the people behind this achievement. We know that these are not just numbers, as behind each number there is a mother, a father, a grandparent, a husband, a wife, a child or a youth, but more importantly for us he or she is simply another precious member of our world family that deserves our care without cost. Keep going!"

A Note of Appreciation

Our gratitude to our team of doctors, nurses, paramedic staff both from Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital Batticaloa as well as our donors and well wishers, Hatton Plantations, and the Doctors and Staff of the Eastern University Medical Faculty and the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.

We are also grateful to Muraleeswaran and staff from Kalmunai Base Hospital and Mr Ravin Wickremasinghe from Ruhunu Hospital Karapitiya Galle who assist us with CSSD and ETO Sterilization services.

Last but not least we acknowledge the unstinted support of the Ministry of Health who has allowed collaboration to happen and made the Services of the Sanjeevani Hospital the vehicle to help so many hundreds of families live a better life in times of such severe challenges.
